Cruise Industry To Laumch New Ships In the next couple of years, the cruise industry will welcome ground-breaking new ships and bid farewell to two of the most famous vessels of all time. Let's start with the launches. When they debuted, Royal Caribbean's Freedom-class ships (Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas) made waves as the largest and most innovative passenger ships in history. Next year, the cruise line will outdo itself when it launches the first of its Project Genesis ships. At 220,000 gross registered tons, the Oasis of the Seas (debuting in late 2009) and Allure of the Seas (debuting in 2010), will be significantly larger than the Freedom-class ships (160,000 tons), feature 16 decks, 2,700 staterooms and a previously unimaginable passenger capacity of 5,400 guests. The size of these ships isn't the only thing that will set them apart. Though little information has been released, Royal Caribbean has confirmed that each ship will be comprised of seven different "neighborhoods," one of which will be called Central Park. The most notable feature of Central Park is its radical designP. At the center of the ship, six decks of balcony staterooms will face inward to overlook Central Park, an area roughly the size of a football field, open to the sky, with lush, tropical landscaping. These will be the first non-ocean-view balcony staterooms at sea . According to Royal Caribbean, Central Park will act as the ship's "town square," offering a peaceful atmosphere during the day and serving as an upbeat gathering place at night, with al fresco dining, outdoor concerts and street performances. Dining options in Central Park will include the upscale 150 Central Park, casual Central Park Café, Italian restaurant Giovanni's Table and Royal Caribbean's signature Chops Grille steakhouse. A number of bars and lounges will be found throughout Central Park, including the Rising Tide bar, the first moving bar at sea. A feat of architecture and engineering spanning three decks, Rising Tide will give guests the chance to enjoy a cocktail or two as they slowly ascend into Central Park and then descend back into the public areas below. Central Park will also offer upscale boutiques, quiet reading corners, a chess garden and a sculpture garden, featuring the works of internationally renowned artists. 12. Royal Caribbean makes cruises more accessible for passengers with limited mobility All Royal Caribbean ships have wheelchair accessible cabins with widened stateroom and bathroom doors, roll-in showers, shower benches, and toilet and shower grab bars. All ships also feature lowered guest-relations counters, lowered blackjack tables, lowered or ramped thresholds, and pool and whirlpool lifts. Our Freedom-class ships contain several new amenities, including the H20 Zone, a water park for children where we have plastic wheelchairs for our guests to navigate this wonderful play area. Lawyer sues Delta for ruining family vacation A New York lawyer is suing Delta Air Lines for $1 million, saying his family vacation turned into a nightmare after they were stranded in an airport for days and treated disdainfully by airline employees. ADVERTISEMENT Richard Roth, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of himself and his mother, said he planned the Christmas 2007 trip to Buenos Aires to celebrate his mother's 80th birthday. She had grown up in the city, but had not returned in years, he said. Instead, Roth, his two teenage children, his wife and mother spent three days in airports, went days without their luggage, were treated rudely by airline employees and were forced to spend $21,000 on unused hotel rooms in Argentina, replacement clothes, and other costs. "Through its gross negligence, malfeasance and absolute incompetence, Mr. Roth holds Delta responsible for ruining his vacation," said the lawsuit, filed in New York state court. Delta Air Lines Inc had no immediate comment. Roth said that he has been in touch with Delta about getting reimbursed, but was repeatedly rebuffed. He told Reuters on Wednesday filing the suit was a last resort. After the initial flight from New York was delayed by more than two hours, the family was not allowed to board their connecting flight in Atlanta, Roth said. A Delta employee "literally walked away chuckling that he had left them stranded," he said. After waiting in the airport for hours, Roth was told the next available flight would depart more than two weeks later. He then booked a flight through a different airline and arrived in Argentina three days later than planned. The family was not reunited with their luggage for more than five days. "Suffice it to say, Mr. Roth's elderly mother was a mess. And she has been suffering ever since. The kids are all upset. And it was Christmas Eve. Mr. Roth had spent one-half of his vacation in Buenos Aires chasing Delta and its incompetent representatives," the lawsuit said. 14.
